Portraits of Women and Men Being Smoked One Last Time
Some of the most unforgettable images from my childhood are of my iconic mother smoking hand-rolled cigarettes filled with Prince Henry tobacco. Daughter of the patriarchy, she quietly rebelled and created the first private nursing home to help poor women with family planning and safe childbirth and became an unknown champion of the poor. Smoking and driving were her only pleasures and bold gestures of emancipation in the otherwise conservative and chauvinistic society of her time.
