The Lost and Found Magic of Shekhawati
Shekhawati is a bewitchingly beautiful region of the that desert in Northern Rajasthan, India, steeped in thousands of years of history. In the past two centuries, its rich culture has been shaped by the Shekhawati Rajput rulers, and the region’s towns and villages are living museums, steeped in myth and magic, tribal music, and stunning architecture. Desolate haveli’s, once populated by kings and queens, poignant temples, and a feast of fresco lavished across every imaginable surface, tell mind-blowing stories creating a dreamlike environment in the shimmering landscape.
I visited the region for a few days and left mesmerized, vowing to return again to its rugged and hospitable indigenous people. The place hypnotized and inspired me but I was also saddened by the lack of state attention in preserving and advancing this magical place. Fortunately, a few entrepreneurs have taken it upon themselves to return some of the havelis to their past glory.
The Vivaana Culture Hotel in Ajitgarh and the meticulously restored 19th century Shekhawati Haveli in Mandawa, the work of epicure Atul Khanna are two exciting destinations. A passionate and devoted team manages these properties offering visitors a taste of the decadence and beauty of Shekhawati and an appreciation and respect for its stunning local crafts, music traditions, history and culture.
